If I had more hours in a day I would take art classes. The more I think about art and all the projects I have lined up in my head that I would love to do, the more certain I am that I should have gone to art school. And yet, not knowing I should have gone to art school and not going was the best thing that ever happened to me. And that is because of a giant young man that happened to enter my life at a nerdy (but very cool) engineering school back East. Thank God.
So, I will have to find other ways to teach myself or get taught the methods of expressing myself artistically. I hope I’m heading in the right direction.
Ladies and Gentlemen: This is my first attempt at a watercolor painting. It has been a long time since I have drawn anything, let alone paint. In fact, I have no idea how to paint. This is my first painting, period, if you don’t count childhood doodles. It’s very simple, nothing fancy like Leon Bonvin.

This is a painting I made for my sister for her 30th birthday. Hungarians pretty much only call others by nicknames and it is almost unheard of to speak someone’s proper name at all. Oftentimes, couples will designate an animal as the term of endearment for their loved one, and it usually sticks for life. Although we are sisters, we decided a long time ago to follow this tradition: Kathy is “Tigris”, Tiger, and I am “Pillango,” Butterfly. And there you have it!
The painting is still here sitting on my desk begging to be nearly destroyed (again) by Thomas. (After many hours and nearly finished I got lazy and did not protect it well from the slobbery hands of Thomas. When I saw his wet fingers drag across the face of the tiger I pretty much lost it. I didn’t even get mad, I just cried, like a baby. But only for 2 minutes because Thomas started hyperventilating-crying, which I had never seen him do, and I began to pity him more than myself and the painting. What would another 4 hours fixing it be anyway?) But I promise to officially give it to you soon, Tigrisem. I know how I want to frame it, it’s only a matter of time.
And so, what do you think? Should I try painting again?

*And I should mention that I did not draw this from nothing. I’m not that skilled. I was looking for a picture of a tiger that I could try to draw from and came across one with a butterfly (what were the chances?) I feel terribly that I cannot remember where I found it because I should give that person credit for the idea. My apologies!
I remember how talented you were back in elementary school. You would always do those profile pictures. I would always try to copy you but mine never turned out anywhere near as good as yours. I remember this design project we had to do for homework in like fifth grade or something. You were always so creative and I always wanted to be as good as you. Thank you for being a great role model and for being a driving force in my life. You were, and will always be so special and talented to me!
Andrea, you are one of the most amazing, beautiful, talented and strongest people I know. I wish I could just come over and hang out with you for awhile and learn from you (I plan on it at some point). You should definitely keep up the painting. You are quite good at it. And painting is such a relaxing hobby. Oh, and take it from someone who did go to art school…. You don’t need to go to art school to be talented at all things art 😉 You have truly shown how talented you are through your photography and now your painting.

I too think you should continue and the picture looks like a beautiful cover for a children’s book so why don’t you add another talent to your basket and write a book about the tigris and the butterfly.!
